Join the Usk Astronomical Society together with Talybont on Usk Tourism on Zoom where, state of the art planetarium software will be used so that you can be part of our Dark Skies event and see the stars on your own tablet, PC or phone, making you feel as though you are actually in Talybont-on-Usk gazing at the night sky.
Although most of what will be shown can be seen from modestly light polluted skies they truly come into their own in the pristine dark skies of Talybont on Usk, deep in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, an international Dark Sky reserve, one of only 16 in the world.
October and November are a fascinating time of year for stargazing. The evenings get dark early so the whole family can join in and it is the best time to follow the myths of ancient Greece played out in the constellations. The jealous Queen Cassiopeia and her lovely daughter Andromeda, King Cepheus her husband, the hero Perseus on his winged horse Pegasus and Cetus the terrifying sea monster, are all there to be seen.
This year the planet Mars is resplendent all evening in Pisces and later we can see the magnificent Orion the hunter grace the eastern skies along with Taurus the mighty bull. You will be able to see the Andromeda Galaxy just as it was two and a half million years ago; the furthest thing you can see by eye. If you have binoculars or a small telescope you will be shown how to find some gorgeous open clusters that glitter like diamonds on black velvet, objects that once seen you will want to revisit time and time again.
We know that you can’t join us face to face currently, but we would welcome you to our village to stay and enjoy what we have to offer in the future. For places to stay and more go to:https://talybontonusk.com/
Once you have registered a link to Zoom will be sent to you.
