Welcome to The Start, riverside b&b accommodation in Hay-on-Wye. Steve completely renovated our 18th century home to give us three ensuite rooms all with splendid views. New for this year we have a Jack&Jill suite ideal for walkers or families, sleeps a max of four, to go alongside our double and twin rooms.
For those that arrive by car there is off road parking, we also have cycle lock-up and there’s drying facilities should anyone get wet!! Back to the rooms, all have the usual facilities, with wifi throughout. We use antique linen sheets and blankets and my mum makes the Welsh quilts for extra warmth and comfort, and you will find power showers and towel heaters in the ensuites.
Breakfast is served in the dining room between 8&9 am and comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. We offer a cold buffet table with fresh and dried fruit salads, yoghurt, cereals and steve’s gorgeous apple juice, for the main event a full cooked Welsh breakfast complete with laverbread and home-made jams and breads. Vegetarian and coeliac are no problem at all, I make my own vege option for breakfast and we have plenty of gluten free products. Ooh did I mention the eggs from ‘the Girls’ in the garden, none of our ingredients travel far!
There is a comfy residents lounge crammed with local information on great days out and guests are more than welcome to borrow the maps. Steve was born and bred in Hay so can give you any info you need about the fantastic surrounding countryside.
We try and live in an environmentally sustainable way and we endeavour to provide a relaxed, tranquil and friendly atmosphere for all our guests, it’s very important to us that you have a great time. Feel free to read our reviews on trip advisor and see what others have said. The main of our business comes from guests returning or recommendations to friends, so whatever your reason to stay, be it book buying, adventure making or simply taking time out to breathe, spoil yourself – you deserve it!
