The small but ancient market town of Talgarth sits comfortably beneath the Black Mountains.
Talgarth forms an excellent gateway to them for hill walking or mountain biking. Close by you will find two nature reserves, Park Wood and Pwll-y-Wrach, feature in the Wildlife Walks booklet. The 14th century Pele Tower in the town square is now the Tourist Information Centre. The religious settlement Hywel Harris (the founder of Welsh Methodism) set up in nearby Trefecca still survives as a college and museum.
