Penderyn Mineral Line

This quiet route is ideal for spotting local wildlife as well as evidence of industrial and social history. The route follows an old tramway that runs from Penderyn to Hirwaun which linked the limestone quarry to the ironworks.

The route has a gentle compacted stone surface, but it can get muddy in places after long spells of rain. There are also anti-motorcycle barriers at either end of the trail and at points along the trail. The Penderyn Quarry Line leaflet contains details on wildlife and historical features.

How to get there: The route runs parallel to the A4059 Hirwaun to Brecon road. There are two start points: Penderyn -cross the bridge just north of the Penderyn Whisky plant or cross the railway line at the end of Penyard Road, Hirwaun.

Nearest town/Village: Penderyn or Hirwaun.

OS Grid Reference: Explorer Map OL 12 or Landranger Map 160 –SN 951 085 (Penderyn) or SN 959 061 (Hirwaun).

Distance: The routes extends for up to 2km from Penderyn to Hirwaun.

Facilities: There are two pubs in Penderyn, but no other facilities nearby. The closest shops are in Hirwaun.

Parking: Roadside parking in Penderyn and at Hirwaun.

Toilets: There are toilets in Hirwaun, although the closest disabled access toilets are at Cwm Porth car park (Grid Ref SN 928 125) or Aberdare.
