Mynydd Isaf heather burning project
One interesting project we have in the west of the Park is the heather management on Mynydd Isaf.
The area is a part of the Black Mountain which is situated in Carmarthenshire overlooking Carreg Cennen Castle. It is also an interesting area of cairns and old field systems on the lower banks.
The heather in this area hasn't been burnt for many years therefore it has grown long and rank which is no good for wildlife or grazing. During the last few years we have managed to do some burning which has meant we have seen some grouse return to the area. The weather is a key factor in heather burning and management.
With proper management the mountain should have a mosaic appearance which is due to the heather being in different stages of growth.
