Practical Work Parties

Enjoy being outside? Want to give a little back to the National Park landscape? Have some spare time on your hands? Then why not join one of our Warden’s Work Parties. Various work, various locations and never boring!

The Warden Service of the National Park Authority work with individual volunteers and also operate weekly work parties throughout the year and these are supervised by Wardens. Volunteers meet the Warden at a pre-arranged venue and share transport to the work site.

Typically a work party group will have a minimum size of 4 volunteers and a maximum of 12 volunteers. Larger groups might well be supervised by two Wardens.

Additional work parties for private groups can sometimes be arranged. This type of work is recognised as suitable service fulfilment by those working towards Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme awards.

The type of work our volunteers undertake includes:

  • Public Rights of Way maintenance on footpaths and bridleways.
  • Conservation tasks on National Park Authority owned sites: thinning and coppicing on woodland sites, grass cutting of amenity sites and acid grassland improvements on areas of common land.
  • Training in the Health & Safety aspects of practical work parties will be provided by Wardens and sometimes, more specialised training such as hedge-laying or dry stone walling may be provided.
