Protected species
Some of our rarest and most fragile wildlife enjoys special protection in law. Identifying the presence of protected species early in the planning process it will help to ensure that the development is fully compliant with UK and European legislation.
It is still possible to undertake development where protected species are present, provided the developer has obtained a licence to do the work.
Information on licences for protected species work is available on CCW's website under Licenses.
Where protected species laws have been broken, the Police may investigate the matter to decide if a criminal offence has been committed.

The National Park Authority has a duty to conserve wildlife. This is delivered through the Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP). Development that effects the habitats and species in the LBAP may require alteration to ensure that these habitats and species are conserved. Occasionally planning permission might be refused if irreversible damage is caused to a species or habitat.
More information is contained in the Authority Approved Planning Guidance for Biodiversity including a list of the LBAP habitats and species in the Brecon Beacons National Park.
