Teens go wild in the Park

A group of teenagers from Mid Wales are being given the chance to go wild at a youth adventure camp held in Brecon Beacons National Park later this month.

The week long adventure, held from 18th-26th August will give thirty local teenagers the opportunity to enjoy a variety of adventure based activities in amongst some of Wales’ finest scenery.

This is the second youth camp organised by Powys Community Safety Partnership and Dyfed Powys Police which has been appropriately named ‘on the wild side’.  The camp is designed to offer disadvantaged teens from Powys an unforgettable summer experience focusing on environmental conservation, character development, team building, and community spirit.

Iolo Williams reaffirmed his support for the camp saying: “What makes this youth camp so outstanding is that it will help young adults make informed choices about the environment, their health, their families and their community.  That's the most powerful knowledge we can give young people today to help them stay focused throughout their lives.”

PC Andy Pole, Youth Camp Organiser and Community Beat Officer for Dyfed Powys Police said:  “These teenagers are exceptional individuals with vast untapped potential –some are not making the most of their abilities in their current school, social or family situations and some are simply struggling with the pressures of day-to-day life. By offering them an opportunity to put something back into their community we are effectively giving them a new start.

“We are all important role models and mentors to these kids and we hope this camp will help them make some positive choices about their lives and feel part of the communities they have been raised in.”

County Councillor Graham Brown, Chair of the Powys Community Safety Partnership said:  “We hope that the young adults will make the most of this opportunity to develop their own skills, to become positive role models and in the future contribute to the re-building of communities and making Powys a safer place to live.

“As a Partnership, we hope to follow their progress and continue our work with this camp and the young adults of Powys for years to come.  The commitment and enthusiasm of our partner agencies has made our second programme just as exciting as the first.”

Chris Gledhill, Chief Executive for Brecon Beacons National Park Authority said:  “This is our second ‘on the wild side’ adventure programme and we are delighted to again receive the support of Iolo Williams.

“This is a perfect opportunity for young adults to connect with the beautiful landscape that surrounds them, developing their character, leadership, and friendships – all of which will last a lifetime.”
