Eco Centre Status

We are proud and happy to announce that our residential centre near Talybont-on-Usk and our Visitor Centres at Craig-y-nos and Libanus have all qualified as Eco-centres! It’s the equivalent of having an Eco-School ‘Green Flag’! Also this month, congratulations to Penycae school who have been awarded with their 4th Green Flag achieving a Platinum award. They are the 1st school in Wales to achieve this!

Eco Centres

The aim of the Eco- centres programme is to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of the Centre for all its staff and visitors. All the staff at the Centres have worked hard to lessen their impact on the environment, helped by visitors, other National Park staff and organisations such as the YHA and Welsh Water. Huge progress has been made in reducing waste, energy and water consumption as well as improving the recycling facilities, grounds and environmental education. The achievement of the Green Flag is recognition that these Centres are doing what they can to inspire visitors, young and old, to become more environmentally aware and active. National park education officers can offer practical advice and support to Centres wishing to embark on this programme. For further information contact the Education Service or www.econet.org.uk

Eco Schools

Eco schools is a programme which promotes environmental awareness and links to many curriculum subjects including Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC). It is an award scheme- the highest award is a Green Flag which can be displayed at the school. Many schools are participating in the programme and are benefiting from their involvement.

National Park Education Officers have several years experience of the Eco school process and are trained Eco School assessors. They can offer practical advice and support to schools considering starting the programme or progressing towards their Green Flag. For further information contact the Education Service or Eco Schools at www.eco-schoolswales.org
