Rivers.

Where do rivers start, how do they move and shape the landscape? Try your hand at measuring the channel shape and stream flow and look at meanders.

Course description: This half day course enables the children to discover the importance of water in shaping the landscape through investigation and discussion. It involves visiting two sites close to the centre. A minibus is required.

Main Activity: Fieldwork - including investigating how a river changes downstream

Site 1: This session takes place near the source of the River Caerfanell. Through exploration, discussion and investigation, pupils will discover how and where rivers start and factors which contribute to their development. Children will explore the main characteristics of this part of the river by measuring the width, depth and speed of the river.

Site 2: This session takes place further downstream and children will repeat the measurements in order to compare this part of the river with a site near its source. By looking for evidence on the river banks they will gain knowledge and understanding  of erosion and deposition especially with respect to meanders. The measurements collected can be used for follow up work such as data handling.
