Nature's night hikers.

Test your night vision, learn about bats and uncover the secrets of the night on this journey without streetlights.

This evening course enables the children to learn about bats and other nocturnal animals. It provides the opportunity to go on a night hike and experience the sounds and atmosphere of the countryside at night in a safe environment. This activity is not possible during high summer.

Main Activity: The children play a game of ‘bat and moth’ to demonstrate how bats use echo-location and try to detect pipistrelle bats at the Danywenallt roost using a bat detector. Given suitable weather, it is also possible to set a humane moth trap to attract moths overnight. A variety of moths can be observed in more detail the following morning.

The children then go on a short night-hike around the centre and, with torches, try to spot the nocturnal animals ‘hiding’ in the undergrowth. During the hike there is the opportunity to encounter  different breeds of bat, discover badger trails and listen to the sounds of the night.
