Farm visit.

A trip around a local Tir gofal farm with an introduction from the farmer. An opportunity to play historical detective and find out when the field hedges were planted. Best time when trees are in leaf.

Course description:  This half day course involves a visit to a local hill farm. It is a mixed farm of sheep, cattle and crops which is managed sustainably under the Tir Gofal( Care of the Land) agricultural scheme and uses traditional farming techniques where appropriate such as hedge laying.

Main Activity: The children are taken on a tour of the farm by the farmer and the education team. They learn about how the farm is managed and measures taken to farm sustainably and  conserve wildlife habitats. Depending on the season, they are able to view first hand, the farm animals fruit orchards and crops, to learn where their food comes from and the importance of farming as an industry. Hands on activities include tree and hedge  measuring and dating.

NB All farm visits are fully risk assessed and supervised.
