Discover and compare the animals that live in ponds and streams. Identify them with keys, and investigate how they have adapted to their environment. Then discover how they are linked together in a food chain.
Course description: This half day course enables children to investigate how different species adapt to their environment by comparing freshwater invertebrates in found in the pond at Danywenallt and a nearby stream. The stream visit requires a minibus. They will also learn about food chains through an interactive game.
Main Activity
Session A —: For this session the children are driven to a local stream. In small groups they make predictions about their findings and use keys to identify and record the animals found.
Session B — : The children return to Danywenallt and carry out a similar activity at the Centre pond. They compare the animals found at both sites and consider how the animals have adapted to their environment.
This session ends with a food chain game to demonstrate how animals are dependant on plants and each other and the effects of breaking the chain.
