Great Crested Newts

While usually thought of as pond animals, great crested newts are only pond residents during the breeding season in spring. During the rest of the year they might be found in stone and log piles, hedgerows, dense vegetation or practically anywhere that offers shade and damp. Great crested newts are protected in UK and European law.

 

 

Any development within several hundred metres of a pond known to support breeding great crested newts could be affected by their presence elsewhere. They will inhabit a variety of ponds and make use of any available habitat to move around, forage or hibernate outside of the breeding season.  Any development that affects them would require a Habitats Regulations licence.
