Record your garden wildlife

With increases in population and changes in our countryside, our gardens are becoming more and more important as refuges for wildlife. With their diversity of soils and habitats and their wide mix of plant species, gardens represent a significant contribution to biodiversity. In Britain, gardens collectively cover around 270,000 hectares, making up our largest nature reserve. And with 80% of our homes having gardens, there's plenty of opportunity to get involved.

Whether your garden is big or small, by making a few, simple changes to the way you manage your garden, you can help to encourage a wealth of wildlife to visit.

And by letting us know what wildlife visits your garden, you will be helping us to build up a better picture of the biodiversity in our National Park.

We have put together a simple freepost garden wildlife survey form which focuses on easily recognisable species such as slow worms and greater spotted woodpeckers. All we need you to do is fill it in, telling us which of these species occur in your garden and when you last saw them.

All the survey information we gather will enable us to work out how widespread or rare some of our species are and where we need to focus our efforts. So the more people we get to fill in the forms ... the better for our wildlife.

HOW DO I TAKE PART?

To take part in the survey, you can either download the Go Wild in your Garden leaflet & survey form - available below as Adobe Acrobat PDF documents (if you don't have the free Acrobat Reader software installed on your computer, you can download it from Adobe's web site) OR you can get a paper copy of the form sent to you.
