Familiar wildlife a thing of the past?

Some of Wales' most familar species are now officially so scarce they require special action for conservation. The UK Government has published the new list of species included in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. This now includes many well known species such as hedgehogs, slow-worms, toads and the common lizard - now not so common!

The UK Biodiversity Action Plan is the UK's commitment to the International Convention on Biological Diversity. This is administered by the United Nations and was first signed by more than 120 States at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit.

The new list includes nearly 1150 species and 65 habitats that are considered to be of principle importance for conservation action in the UK. Once even common species like hedgehogs and skylarks are now rarely seen.

Conservation organisations and individuals work in local partnerships across the UK to ensure that these animals and plants are allowed space to live in our increasingly busy urban and agricultural landscape.

Many of the species on the list were once common in gardens across the UK. By making some space for wildlife in a garden, everybody can make a vaulable contribution to conserving these species. Gardens in rural areas may be much more attractive to wildlife than grazed pastures, while even small gardens in towns can be important, particularly as a stepping stone to allow species like birds to move through the landscape.
