While only a small country, the range of habitats from the coasts to the mountains contain possibly the most varied biodiversity of any comparable size in Europe. Biodiversity conservation in Wales is of international importance and this is recognised in the number of sites with international conservation designations.
The Welsh Assembly Government is now responsible for a number of legal and international obligations with regard to biodiversity conservation.
The Wales Biodiversity Partnership acts as the key government advisor on biodiversity issues and oversees biodiversity conservation in Wales.
Local Biodiversity Action plans have also been prepared for the rest of the Local Authority area outside of the National Park.
