Public Rights of Way Surveys
The National Park Authority has delegated responsibility for the condition and maintenance of the 1980 kms of public rights of way within its boundaries, and is required to conduct a survey of 5% of the total each year. Most of the routes will be on farmland, but there are a few which traverse the higher common land.
Volunteers are needed to survey specified routes to check whether they are open, easy to use, follow the line on the definitive map and report back on the condition of stiles, gates and bridges. These surveys are usually carried out in the first three months of the year, but there are other occasions when routes need to be checked. Surveyors are provided with the necessary maps, forms and training to carry out the administration.
An ability to read a map and provide accurate grid references is essential, but the surveys can be carried out in your own time and at your own pace.
