Buildings, barns and other structures.
Some species roost in or next to buildings and other structures. Therefore proposed alterations and refurbishment must take the presence of protected species into consideration.
Even if the work does not require planning permission, it is still important to consider protected species that may be living in a building. It may be necessary to obtain a licence to carry out the work or to perform the work at a certain time of year.
This is particularly relevant for building demolition. Abandoned or derelict buildings are particularly attractive to bats and the destruction of a roost may consistute an offence which may be investigated by the Police. Before any demolition takes it is recommended that a licensed bat worker is consulted.
Information on licences for protected species work is available on CCW's website under Licenses.
In all cases it is recommended that developers and householders identify any potential issues caused by the presence of protected species well before the work is intended to be carried out.
