Sustainable Schools

Education initiatives focusing on ideas and issues around sustainability are on the increase. Both the Welsh Assembly Government and Central Government are encouraging citizens and educators to work towards sustainability.

In this section you will find information on Eco Schools, Eco Centres, Healthy Schools and School Grounds.  In addition across the National Park there are many other fascinating projects from community initiatives, to sustainable development .

Our seasonal newsletter will also provide you with ideas, news, and activities relating to sustainability.

Eco Schools

The Brecon Beacons National Park Authority supports the Government in its Eco Schools initiative which encourages pupils to engage with issues related to environment and sustainability.  Students become key contributors to decisions about reducing the environmental impact of their school. The Welsh Assembly Government is using the number of schools attaining Green Flag status (a recognition of high achievement in the programme) as an indicator of success for its Environment Strategy.

Some of our team of Education Officers are trained Eco Schools Assessors and are able to provide your school with advice on gaining Eco School awards. We are able to come to your school and meet with you, however, we are unable to chair/sit on your Eco Committee.

For further information about Eco Schools please visit the main UK Eco Schools website or the Wales Eco Schools site.

Eco Centres

Eco Centre awards for Education and Residential Field Centres are applied for through Eco Schools' sister-programme. The Brecon Beacons National Park Authority has gained Eco Centre status for both Craig y nos Country Park and the YHA Danywenallt Study Centre whilst the National Park Visitor Centre is working on its action plan and hopes to submit an application in the near future.

Healthy Schools

We support the Healthy Schools initiative and are particularly keen to promote the ideas that "a healthy lifestyle will help you to perform better in school and life"and that physical activity extends way beyond PE.  We have already worked in partnership with Communities 1st Ystradgynlais to develop playground toy chests which help children to enjoy the outdoors.

For further information on healthy schools please visit the main

Healthy Schools website.

School Grounds

In recent years our Education Team and Warden Service have spent quite a lot of time working in school grounds. To help with this work we have also partnered with Careers Wales  to offer INSET/twilight training sessions on developing, maintaining and most importantly using your school grounds for learning. We anticipate that more of our efforts in the future will be focused on training you rather  than direct involvement with ground work.

The schools grounds' charity Learning Through Landscapes has recently been awarded support to start work in Wales.  Visit their website to find out more.
