Health and Safety policies

The health and safety of all groups is considered of paramount importance by the BBNPA and the YHA. The following lists the main policies implemented. If you have any further questions please get in touch.

Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA)

The Brecon Beacons National Park Authority is licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) for hill walking and mountaineering -  registration number L6468/R1250. Please note that we may be unable to lead mountain walks in winter conditions, i.e. snow on the ground but we will provide alternative activities.

Risk Assessments

Comprehensive risk assessments are carried out and reviewed regularly for all the educational activities. The sites have also been carefully surveyed. Please note that each activity is also reviewed on the day it takes place and if necessary the activities and routes may be amended.

Our Staff

All our leaders are either qualified teachers or have many years experience of teaching outdoor environmental education. Leaders also have, or are training towards, a group leadership qualification. We will provide a ratio of qualified leaders that satisfies the standards of the National Park Authority's and the YHA's Health and Safety Policies. Our leaders also have a valid First Aid certificate and have passed a Police Authority Enhanced CRB check. The Centre adheres to a code of practice for child protection. There is a member of YHA staff on duty throughout the night and a member of the BBNPA is with the group when activities take place.

Minibuses

The National Park operates two minibuses which are fitted with seatbelts and head rests. The vehicles are serviced and regular safety checks are carried out.

Our staff have completed a MIDAS minibus proficiency test

In transit we legally require one responsible adult from the school, in addition to the driver, to supervise the group. Please note that your staff and adult helpers are responsible for the discipline of the group and pastoral care at all times during your stay.

Public Liability Insurance

Insurance is provided and a certificate is held at the Centres for inspection

The Centre

The catering facilities are inspected annually by the County Council Environmental Health Service. The kitchen is supervised by staff holding an Intermediate Food Hygiene Award and all the catering staff has a basic food hygiene certificate.

The Centre has a fire management system with a smoke/heat detector in every bedroom and written evacuation procedures prominently displayed.

A fire evacuation practice is carried out at the beginning of every educational visit.

An asbestos survey has been carried out at the Centre. The electrical circuits are of an approved standard and an electrical Installation Certificate held. This is renewed, following an inspection, every three years. All electrical appliances are safety tested.
