Who's involved and how the Geopark is administered
A European Geopark is a territory whose geological heritage is of European significance. It will have a sustainable development strategy with a strong management structure, supported by a European funding programme, to aid further development.
There are a variety of activities that can be considered typical of a Geopark. Most are either geotourism or education-based, including schools programmes, guided walks and museum exhibitions. Geological heritage protection and promotional activities are also essential activities of a Geopark. Socio-economic activities in Geoparks are important for sustainable regional development.
Geoparks adopt a holistic approach to their heritage and promote all aspects of their region’s natural and cultural heritage.
Fforest Fawr Geopark is a partnership between Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, the British Geological Survey and Cardiff University together with a host of other organisations with local, regional or national interests.
A Partnership Board meets annually and a Geopark Management Group meets quarterly to discuss matters of policy and strategy.
The Partnership Board has endorsed a vision for the future development of Fforest Fawr Geopark which was developed by the Management Group together with a set of objectives.
