Case Studies

The Brecon Beacons National Park has been encouraging people to consider renewable energy as a real option in changing their energy requirements. If you would like to see some examples of what's happened so far, please read on...

The following are examples of some of the renewable energy projects that the Brecon Beacons National Park has directly supported. All of these projects were supported through the Sustainable Development Fund.

  • Talybont-on-Usk Energy - Community owned hydro-electric scheme.
  • Upper Nedd Renewables Feasibility Project.
  • Brynaman Sheltered Housing -Biomass and Solar Water Heating Project co-ordinated by Awel Aman Tawe.
  • Brecon Beacons Solar Club which concentrated on Solar Water Heating and operated from 2001 - 2006.
  • Renewable Energy Assistance Programme (REAP).  REAP was established in 2006 and took over where the Brecon Beacons Solar Club left off. REAP currently offers advice and grants for most forms of micro renewable energy sources including solar thermal, photovoltaic, hydro-electric, wood-fuelled heat sysytems, heat pumps, and wind. This project has really pushed forward the argument that renewable energy sources are a viable option in the Brecon Beacons.
